Operational induction for Non Western Power personnel

This Operational Induction will provide Non Western Power personnel with an introduction to relevant safety, health and environment legislation, the Western Power safety, health and environment (SHE) management system, minimum SHE requirements and an overview of some of the key hazards associated with working on or near the network.

Course Duration

6 online modules, allow 30 – 40 minutes per module.

You are required to complete all modules in the order provided, however each module is stand-alone and can be completed separately. To complete each module you must complete it’s assessment.

Who Should Complete

All Non Western Power personnel who are required to work on or around the Western Power Network or require a Network Authority Card.

Learning Outcomes

Module 1 – Working at Western Power

• The legislative requirements for Western Power and why you need to understand them.
• Why Western Power is regulated and who regulates Western Power.
• Western Power’s ‘duty of care’ for providing a safe working environment for you.
• Your ‘duty of care’ while working at Western Power.

Module 2 – Safety First Part 1- Safety Health and Environment Management System

• What the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Management System is when working at Western Power.
• Where you can find Western Power SHE information.
• What to do when working on the network to manage risk.
• How to report hazards and incidents.

Module 3 – Safety First Part 2 – Safety Health and Environment requirements

• What some of our minimum safety, health and environment requirements are.
• What you need to do to ensure you and your team go home safely every day.
• How you can minimise your impact on the environment.
• What our requirements are when entering a private landowner’s property.

Module 4 – SHE Risk Management

• Understand what a hazard is and how to identify hazards in the workplace.
• What controls can be put in place to minimise risk.
• How to assess if the controls in place are effective.
• How to complete a task risk assessment.
• When to review the risk assessment.
• How to use the Stop Work Authority.

Module 5 – Western Power Network

• How electricity is transmitted and distributed over the network.
• What are the hazards you need to be aware of while working on the network.
• What the dangers are of working on and around electricity.
• What the requirements are for operating and maintaining the network.

Module 6 – Accessing the Network

• What your responsibilities are when working on the Western Power Network.
• Who the key site personnel are and their responsibilities.
• Which permits and electrical tags are used and when to use them.
