People who are required to undertake or observe basic excavation tasks, eg. hand digging, safety observation, etc.

  • Hazard identification and controls
  • Isolation and site requirements
  • Select, check and use tools and equipment
  • Identifying types of location devices
  • Obtaining details of service and utility locations
  • Contacting service owners
  • Searching for services or utilities
  • Moving, protecting and supporting services
  • The 4 P’s of excavation (plan, pothole, protect, proceed)
  • Clearing the work area
  • Checking, storing and maintaining equipment
  • Reporting and record keeping

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

  • PPE Level 1
  • Hat/Sun protections
  • Wet weather gear – weather dependent

Assessments

Written and practical assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes.
Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.

Certification

A Statement of Attainment upon successful completion of the individual unit of competency
DBYD certification
