Low voltage network switching

This five day course provides training aligned to the Western Power LOU (low voltage overhead and underground) switching authority level. This course includes:

• low voltage overhead and underground switching authority level
• low voltage overhead and underground switching procedures
• drop out fuse and HV live line taps for single transformer’s access to LV only

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for people who are required to work as an authorised Western Power LOU switching operator.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this course are:

• Network Authority Card (NAC)
• XSUB2 Substation Entry authorisation
• LNA3D RIC Distribution authorisation
• eNAR authorisation
• A Western Australian Electricians Licence – Certificate of Registration (issued by EnergySafety WA), or
• A Certificate III in ESI Distribution Overhead, or
• A Certificate III in ESI Distribution Cable Jointing

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the electrical circuitry and component capabilities of the Western Power low voltage distribution network
• Describe the function and operational limitations of LV power transformers in the Western Power distribution network
• Identify and describe the components of the LV distribution network’s shorting & protection schemes
• Demonstrate the use of Western Power policy and procedural tools and documentation for Western Power’s switching operator LOU authorisation
• Identify and control switching hazards within the SWMS and WRAP process
• Plan and prepare switching operation tasks which include HV DOFs protecting LV transformers and any configuration of LV distribution networks
• Application and removal of HV and LV live line taps/clamp
• Demonstrate written and practical skills required to perform LV switching operations as per Western Power’s switching operator LOU authorisation

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

PPE Level 3, including:

• rated gloves appropriate to the voltage
• face shield

Assessments

Written and practical assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes.
Participants will be required to complete an on-the-job workbook. This workbook includes a number of written and practical assignments.
The assignments must be completed and submitted to Power Training Services WA within three months of completing the course.
Participants will not be considered to have completed the course until all on-the-job assignments have been successfully completed.
