Primary connections, disconnectors, circuit breaker tests and checks

This course will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to connect primary equipment via bolted jointing procedures, load-bearers and torque settings as well as perform basic routine tests and checks on disconnectors and circuit breakers using specified tools and instruments.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for Western Power employees and contractors who are required to connect primary equipment, and perform tests and checks on disconnectors and circuit breakers.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this course are:

  • Network Authority Card
  • Western Australian Electrical Licence

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

  • Understand the principles of torque and demonstrate the use of a torque wrench
  • Understand the principles of electrolytic corrosion of methods of prevention
  • State the procedure for preparation of an aluminium flexible
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure to produce aluminium to aluminium, copper to copper, aluminium to copper bolted current-carrying joints
  • State the procedures to:
- ensure correct alignment of disconnectors and earth switches - check and adjust contact timing on manual and electrically operated disconnectors - check and adjust contact timing on earth switches - interlock disconnectors and earth switches
  • Understand the principles of low resistance measurement, demonstrate the functions of a Ductor and analyse measurements taken
  • Understand the environmental requirements of, and testing procedures for, insulating oil and sulphur hexafluoride

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

Participants are required to wear PPE that meets standard workshop requirements.
Refer to section 3 of the Work Practice Manual for details.

Assessments

Written assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes.
Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
