Installation of low voltage spreader rods

This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge to install spreaders to live low voltage conductors on the Western Power Network.

Who Should Attend

Western Power and contractor powerline workers who are required to install LV spreader rods on the Western Power Network.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this training course are:

  • Network Authority Card (NAC)
  • Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more) (TLILIC2005)
  • One of the following_ qualifications is essential:
    • Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead qualification or
    • Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Cable Jointing qualification or
    • Western Australian Electrician’s Licence – Certificate of Registration(issued by EnergySafety WA) or
    • post-trade electrical qualification

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

  • Explain the purpose of spreader rods
  • Identify the hazards associated with fitting and removing spreader rods
  • State the operational clearances involved when fitting and removing spreader rods
  • Explain the procedure of fitting and removing spreader rods
  • Demonstrate the fitting of LV spreader rods to energised conductors
  • Demonstrate the removal of LV spreader rods to energised conductors

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

Level 1 PPE

  • To undertake this course, the client must provide their own personal harness and lanyard.

Some of the practical training for this course will take place in an operational area. You are required to have/provide Western Power approved PPC and PPE requirements for the practical work. Refer to the Western Power PPE Procedure Sections 3.1 & 3.2, for these requirements.

Note: Power Training Services does not provide PPE, PPC and tools for training courses.

Assessments

Written and practical assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes.
Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
