Crane operator supplementary

This course provides participants with Western Power requirements and procedures for the safe use of cranes and their associated equipment. It also covers the installation and removal of poles and the installation of screw anchors.

Who Should Attend

Suitable for employees/contractors who are required to install and remove poles using a crane and its associated equipment on the Western Power network

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this course are:

• Network Authority Card (NAC)
• Current licence to perform high risk work (CV/C2 or higher) and/or hold one of the following units of competency and associated high risk licence:
  • TLILIC4009A Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (up to 60 tonnes)
  • TLILIC3008A Licence to operate a slewing mobile crane (up to 20 tonnes)
  • TLILIC0012A Licence to operate a vehicle loading crane (capacity 10 tonnes and above)

A higher class of licence supersedes those listed above.

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:

• Conduct pre-operational checks
• Correctly set up a crane
• Safely operate a crane and its attachments
• Bore a hole with a pendulum borer
• Erect a pole through bare energised conductors
• Use a pole jack to remove a pole through bare energised conductors
• Install chance anchors to all specification requirements
• Shut down the crane and prepare for road travel

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

PPE Level 1

• You may be required to provide a crane suitable for the task at hand. PTS will confirm this requirement during your enrolment process.

Assessments

Written and practical assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes.
Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
Participants will be required to complete an on-the-job workbook. This workbook includes a number of written and practical assignments.
The assignments must be completed and submitted to Power Training Services WA within six months of completing the course.
Participants will not be considered to have completed the course until all on-the-job assignments have been successfully completed and then one final assessment before competency can be granted.

Once you have successfully completed the workbook, you will need to make an appointment with PTS to complete the final practical assessment. Refer to PTS045A - Crane Operator Supplementary Assessment for details.
