Western Power overhead line work familiarisation

This twelve day course covers the necessary requirements to become familiar with all of Western Power systems, procedures and equipment related to the overhead network. These requirements will be covered through the electrical safety requirements, material handling and the environment, working at heights, construction and network characteristics, switching operations, testing and commissioning, access to high voltage and low voltage electrical apparatus, low voltage service installation, Western Power’s work procedures and methods.

Who Should Attend

A person that is currently qualified and authorised to work as a live low voltage line worker on another network and requires authorisation to conduct live overhead line work on the Western Power network.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for attendance at this training course are:

• Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead or cable jointing qualification, and
• Western Power induction for operational personnel course
• Perform pole top rescue (UETTDRRF02B)
• Provide first aid (HLTAID003 – with currency in CPR)
• Working safely in the construction industry (CPCCOHS1001A)

Note: All prerequisites need to be current.

• Explain Western Power’s safety and work requirements
• Explain Western Power’s hazardous material and environmental requirements
• Explain Western Power’s requirements for working at heights
• Describe Western Power’s construction and network characteristics
• Outline Western Power’s switching operations requirements and procedures
• Explain Western Power’s requirements for working on or near electrical apparatus
• Describe Western Power’s procedures for low voltage service
• Demonstrate the application of Western Power’s requirements and procedures for overhead line work

PPE/PPC & Equipment Requirements

Some of the practical training for this course will take place in an operational area.

You will also need the following:

• standard line worker’s toolkit
• full body harness
• low voltage insulated gloves and hardworking outers
• wet weather gear

You are required to have/provide Western Power approved PPC and PPE requirements for the practical work. Refer to the Western Power PPE Procedure Sections 3.1 & 3.2, for these requirements.

Note: Unless otherwise stated, Power Training Services does not provide PPE, PPC and tools for training courses.

Assessments

Written and practical assessments are included in the course.
Participants will need to demonstrate the required knowledge and the necessary practical skills in line with the learning outcomes
Participants will not be considered to have completed this course until all assessments have been completed to a satisfactory level.
