(HR) Working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employees at Western Power

This workshop is a valuable resource for managers, supervisors and team members working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander colleagues or communities.
The workshop provides an insight into working with Indigenous people; the impact of cultural obligations, kinship systems and communication-styles.
The information is helpful in understanding the biases that can occur between different cultures, and the impact of applying our own “context of normal” onto those who have a collective approach to life, time management and family.

No bookings will be confirmed until you forward your Approval To Attend Training email from your Formal Leader to Approval Evidence
Note - as this workshop can be conducted off site and there may be some travel involved, please be aware that Western Power’s preferred method of transport is that you travel in a Western Power vehicle (car pool if necessary) or use public transport. However should you need to use your own vehicle you will need to complete a Private Vehicle (grey fleet) Usage Approval form
Learning Outcomes
As a result of attending this course participants should be able to:
• Understand cultural nuances relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People(s) which may manifest in the workplace.
• Learn about Indirect Communication, collective identification and the impact of hierarchy in the workplace.
• Understand about Aboriginal Countries, Family structure, Sorry Time and other significant cultural obligations that may affect the workplace
• A history of Western Power’s involvement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait employment.

Please note There will be no catering provided for any of these sessions. You can bring your own food and refreshments to any session, there are kitchen facilities at all sites.
For those attending sessions at Perth office food and refreshments can be purchased from the Mercato Cafe.
For those attending a session at Prinsep Road, Jandakot depot you will be able to purchase food and coffee from vans that attend the site.
Cancellation Policy
The cost of this course is met through your Function’s D+I training budget.
• If you are unable to attend, please cancel your booking through OnCourse within 7 working days to avoid your HoF receiving notification of the course cost.
• Approval from your formal leader is required before your booking can be confirmed. Please send the approval email to inclusion@westernpower.com.au
• If the minimum class number is not reached, the workshop will be cancelled.
• Participants will be notified asap and offered an alternative date.
